What is Music Therapy?

“Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional” - The American Music Therapy Association

Music therapy sessions are tailored to fit the needs of our clients. Our music therapists are trained to assess, set individualized therapeutic goals, and to create music based experiences that meet those goals. Because every client is different, the activities and music present in sessions vary, but may include active participation in music making through singing and instrument play, moving to music, music listening, and song writing. Our music therapists use client preferred music to strengthen the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client, and to increase engagement.

Possible goal for music therapy include:

  • To improve engagement

  • To improve regulation

  • To improve communication

  • To improve emotional expression

  • To improve problem solving

  • To improve self-advocacy

  • Our practice is formed from a deep understanding of development and how music affects the brain. Instead of focusing on behavior, we utilize a Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship-Based Framework (DIR) to support the growth of our clients.

    • Developmental: We assess and track our client’s social-emotional development using the Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities (FEDCs) from Dr. Stanley Greenspan which cultivates the client’s ability to relate, communicate, and think with confidence.

    • Individual Differences: Every single client we serve is unique in their interests, strengths, sensory profile, medical needs, culture, and family system. We take all of these into account in order to further our clients on their developmental path.

    • Relationship: We know that all individuals are capable of meaningful engagement when their individual differences are taken into account. We join our clients where they are developmentally, establish a sense of safety and trust, and challenge them to grow within the context of a relationship based on respect and joy.

Simultaneously, our training Neurologic Music Therapists equips us with the knowledge and tools to use music to change the brain. Exercises are crafted to address skills such sensory integration, motor movement, memory, and speech. Visit here for more on Neurologic Music Therapy.
