What is Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)?

“Neurologic Music Therapy is a standardized system of clinical techniques that use the functional perception of all properties of music to train and retrain brain and behavior function.” -The Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy

This independent evidence-based treatment model consists of 20 techniques that directly address the development of sensorimotor, cognitive, and speech/language skills. The research that guides NMT relies on neuroplasticity— the brain’s ability to change by strengthening and weakening connections within it. Neurologic Music Therapists have a deep understanding of the ways that music impacts the brain and are trained to use elements of music (rhythm, tempo, melody, etc.) to change the brain.

Neurologic Music Therapists follow the Transformational Design Model to ensure that treatment plans are strategically developed to address appropriate goals and to produce therapeutic outcomes.
